Every build stage has a realistic duration: the shell takes 8–16 weeks, and the whole house takes 6–12 months from site preparation to handover.
The total envelope for a new single-family house is 6–12 months. That range covers everything: preparing the site, building the shell, installing and testing services, fitting out the interior, and clearing the final snag list.
The structural shell — foundations to roof — takes 8–16 weeks and anchors the programme. Its pace is set by concrete, which reaches about 70% of design strength at 7 days and 100% at 28 days; slab formwork is usually stripped after 7–14 days.

Once the roof is on, first fix services begin: socket circuits on 2.5 mm² copper with 16–20 A breakers, lighting on 1.5 mm² with 10–16 A breakers, and water supplies that must hold 1.5 times working pressure for 15 minutes before walls close.
Fit-out follows: partitions finished at 95–125 mm, doors hung in 900–1,000 mm openings, kitchens set at 850–920 mm worktop height, and paint applied at 10–14 m² per litre per coat. The dimensions behind these stages are detailed in the interior fit-out standards guide.
The programme closes at practical completion, which triggers a snag list of typically 10–30 items cleared within 2–4 weeks. For the ordered sequence with the typical failure at each step, see the step-by-step construction process.
